It's Best If You Don’t Know

Rating: PG-13

July 14, 2008

From where Sokka was sitting, he could see Suki over with his sister with Katara’s head in her lap while they talked, stroking her hair comfortingly. Of course, Sokka was confused by this gesture, but when it appeared that Katara was in pain, he felt that natural curiosity kick in and inched closer to hear what they were talking about.

“–had it?” he heard Suki ask–what exactly, he didn’t know.

“For like six months or so? It was horrible, it happened after we started traveling with Aang. I had to wing it and hope for the best,” Katara sighed, closing her eyes. “You’ve been such a big help, Suki.”

“Don’t mention it,” she replied soothingly, still stroking the younger girl’s long hair. “When it happened to me the first time, I thought I was dying I was in so much pain–“

What?” Sokka exclaimed, unsure why he gave up his cover in the first place, but deeply concerned at their conversation.

Both sets of eyes were focused on him, eyebrows raised. “What?”

“What happened to you that made you feel like you were dying?” Sokka exclaimed, looking back and forth between the two females. Suki looked down at Katara, then back up at Sokka, refusing to speak. “Did someone hurt you? Katara, this happened to you, too? Who did it? Zuko?”

“Don’t get me into this,” the mentioned prince said as he walked into the campsite and sat down. There wasn’t anything interesting going on, and when he heard yelling, he felt the need to see what was going on. “What exactly is ‘this’, anyway?”

“No, Zuko didn’t do anything,” Suki rolled her eyes. “Not this time, anyway,” she added as an afterthought, ignoring Zuko’s noise of protest. “Katara’s not feeling well, so do you mind not asking her so many questions?”

“Is she pregna–“

“Finish that sentence and I will kill you,” Katara groaned, clutching her stomach. “Ow.”

“You are, aren’t you?” Sokka shouted, his eyes widening. “Who did it? Zuko–no, Aang. Aang! Get over here!”

“Oh,” Zuko said, realizing dawning. “No, she’s not. It’s the opposite, actually.”

“Sokka, you’re not helping,” Suki sighed, shooting daggers at her boyfriend. “Just shut up, please? For me?”

“Just tell me what’s going on and I’ll stop.” He pouted, crossing his arms over his chest, glaring back at Suki as Aang came running into the campsite with Toph.

“What? What’s wrong?” Aang panted, looking around at everyone to see if they were okay. The second his gaze landed on Katara, he ran over to her. “Katara, what’s wrong?”

“Sokka, I hate you.”

“I love you, too, sis.”

“Katara?” Aang asked, concerned for her. “Are you all right?”

“I just have bad cramps, that’s all. It’s a girl thing we have to put up with,” she tried to explain. “Hopefully they’ll go away soon. Suki’s just helping me out since she deals with them, too.”

Aang nodded, understanding. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it with a soft smile. “If you need anything, let me know.”

“Hit Sokka for me?”

“No! Ow, Suki!” he moaned as he rubbed the side of his head, wincing where Suki had smacked him.

“You big baby, I didn’t hit you that hard,” Suki frowned.

“Still,” he complained. “Ow.”

“Thank you, though, Aang,” Katara smiled at him before he nodded and moved to sit next to her, opting for the ground so he could be closer.

“No questions are being answered,” Sokka complained again, inching out of Suki’s range when she sent him another glare. “Can we please just tell me what’s going on? What made you feel like you were dying?”

“Cramps, Sokka. You’ve gotten a cramp before, right?” Suki responded.

“Like a leg cramp from running?” he asked, trying to reason with what she was saying.

“Along those lines, I suppose,” she shrugged. “Just imagine someone reaching up into your stomach and trying to pull it out of your–“

“That’s not it, though,” Suki added, frowning. She resumed stroking Katara’s hair comfortingly, and Katara shut her eyes. “For about five days–“

“I don’t know if they should know,” Zuko cut in, giving Suki a passive half-shrug. “Well, Aang, really.”

“Why can’t I know?”

“It’s gross, to be honest,” he replied. “Sorry,” he looked at the females, who nodded in agreement with him.

“It is, really.”

“Let me just explain it to him so he can stop whining,” Suki said, looking over at her impatient boyfriend who was frowning. “When girls become of age, when their bodies are able to start reproducing, they get their period. A girl’s body prepares to get pregnant every single month, and if that doesn’t happen, she bleeds for about five days... uh, everything that was prepared to be fertilized... out...” she trailed off at the look of pure horror on Sokka’s face.

“That happens to all women?” Sokka’s eyes were still wide. “Why did I not know this before?”

“It’s on a need to know basis.”

“Katara,” Aang was watching over her like she was about to break in two. “Really, are you okay? Do you want water? Food? Anything?”

“Oh,” Suki added. “The only thing that really hurts is the cramps at the beginning of the period, if a girl gets them, but the bleeding doesn’t hurt and it’s normal. It’s just the body’s way of cleaning itself out.”

“It doesn’t hurt all the time?” Toph asked, speaking for the first time since she came in with Aang. This was all new information to her.

“You don’t have it?” The question was out before the block could be put up.

“She’s too young,” Katara responded for Suki this time around. “It happens around your thirteenth or fourteenth year, maybe before or maybe after. Depends on your body.”

“To answer your question, it’s a pain in the–er, lady... parts, but... no, not all the time,” Suki said, now bright red, realizing what she actually just told them. “I can’t believe I just gave a lesson on periods to a bunch of teenaged boys.”

“At least it was you and not me,” Katara mumbled, closing her eyes again.

“Oh, you’re lucky that you have your period or I wouldn’t be so kind to you today,” Suki joked, flicking Katara’s head lightly to make the younger girl chuckle.

“Is it that horrible to have?” Aang asked. “It allows you to have children in the future, and that’s a good thing.”

“Not all the time,” Zuko said, leaning back against a log. “Sometimes it’s better if the girl gets it.”

Suki chuckled, eyeing Zuko with a smirk. “Uh huh.”

Sokka took this the wrong way, as he would normally do, and glared at her and Zuko respectively, darting his eyes from one to the other. “What? What is it now?”

“Oh, nothing.”

“If you’re young and have sex, you get scared until the girl gets her period since you don’t want children that early in life. So, when the girl gets her period, it’s a relief, to say the least.”

“And how–“

“With Mai?” Sokka asked, drawing Suki’s attention more so than before. Zuko nodded, clearing his throat, uncomfortable that the conversation was back on him and especially on this topic. “Wow.”

“You’ve never...” Zuko cleared his throat, looking back and forth from Sokka to Suki. “... you know?”

Sokka blushed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, “Well...” Suki shook her head no, beating him to the punch, but didn’t say a word. She mouthed ‘soon’ to Zuko, however, a gesture Sokka missed entirely. Zuko nodded at Suki, a gesture that Sokka actually did see.

“What? What was that?” Sokka asked, eyeing Suki.

“I’ll tell you later,” she responded. Looking down at Katara, she cleared her throat, “All right, Water Tribe, I think it’s about time you let Aang take over for me. My legs are about to go numb from sitting still for so long.”

Hearing this, Aang got up quickly, ready to take over for Suki in a heartbeat, which is what he did when she got up to stand by Sokka, stretching out her legs.

“Wait, so if a girl bleeds, where... where does it go? It can’t just disappear into thin air, right?” Aang asked suddenly, just as Katara laid back against him.

“Katara probably bends it out or something,” Sokka replied as if it was nothing, waving a hand in the air as he spoke in dismissal. “What do you–” he looked up at Suki, who was glaring again. He shrank back, knowing he said something wrong. “Sorry, I’m just curious.”

“Hit him,” Katara said passively, more comfortable in Aang’s arms now than she was before.

“Sokka, could you follow me for a minute?” Suki asked sweetly, borderline scarily, as she extended a hand out to him to take.

“Oh, no,” he declined, shaking his head, “I’m not falling for that one. You’re going to kick my ass if I follow you anywhere.”

“I was just going to answer your question–“

“Sokka,” Zuko said, shaking his head, “trust me. It’s best if you don’t know. There are just some things guys shouldn’t know about women, and this is definitely up there in the top five. Let it go while you’re behind–you know, if you ever want to get laid in your life.”

“I–wait, what?”

“I agree with Zuko,” Suki replied, nodding. “He’s got a point there.”

“Which point do you agree with exactly?” Sokka asked, trying not to blush at the latter-half of what Zuko said.

“Any and all parts of what he said.”

“Ah. I’ll just stop talking, then.”

Yeah, so this was a random idea I had at work that took over... basically when I was in pain from cramps, I wondered what the hell would go on if any female had their period in that show. Then, going further... would the guys (sans Zuko) know what it was in the first place? I doubt Katara would even want to broadcast something like that. Anyway, here's the crack!fic for the LULZ.

No one seems to age? Everyone's been growing and developing, they just don't say when they get a year older, I don't think.

Oh man, lulz all around! xD I like how Suki and Zuko knew more about it than anyone and how much it annoyed Sokka that he didn't. Yay for awkward conversations.
